The larger the pool of competitors, the more people, room, and effort are
required to make the event run as well as a smaller one.

Some locations only have so much room, so many people, and so much desire to
work THAT hard. If you go past any of those points, the fun level starts
dropping.

The only other choice, is to reduce the quality of the event, and start out
with a lower fun level.

Restricting entries may not improve the level of competition, but it does
wonders for maintaining the level of quality of an event.
