Before everyone rushes off and creates 6 ounce flywheels - a 
word or two of caution.

Lightened flywheels can transform an engine giving lively 
response and positive results, but at the expense of solid 
inertial pull, and the damping effect this has on the engine 
and feel of the car.

A few things to watch for however - :-  
In removing material - specially on older cast wheels care needs 
to be taken as to where on the flywheel mass is removed - make 
it too thin in the wrong place and the wheel can disintegrate 
at high revs - this is a frightening experience and the remains 
will probably go right through the bodywork - the car's - and 
possibly the front seat occupant's bodywork too.

Secondly you must rebalance the crank/flywheel/clutch assembly.

No doubt there are other considerations but these ate paramount.
