Kevin,
I started wearing a neck brace after talking with Shauna
Marinus. It seems at Mid Ohio she wasn't wearing a brace and T boned a BMW in
the rain.
Her head snapped forward and her helmet hit and bruised her breast bone. She
also bit through her tongue, ouch! Now she always wears a brace. After
hearing her story I went out and bought one the next day. I wear it every
time I'm on track.
FWIW.

I have limited experience with them, but my impression is that neck braces
are there primarily to deal with crash whiplash conditions. They aren't
really stiff/taut enough to stabilize against g-forces; stock car racers
use leashes for that (don't know the proper term).
