The bearing inserts do indeed have lock tabs like most engines.
However, with the caps removed, the tabs prevent rotation in only one
direction. So, to remove the inserts, you rotate them in the opposite
direction. I use a flattened rod insert and a hammer to tap on the end
without the tab, to start the insert out of the block. I've also seen
it suggested to use a bent cotter pin stuck in the cross hole in the
crank to put pressure on the insert, but I've not tried it.
When putting in the new inserts, some care is called for to guide the
tab into the slot, but it's not difficult. Worst case, you may have to
roll the insert back out, move it slightly on the crank, and roll it
back in. It's really quite easy.
