Gentlemen

I think on reflection that the change to the self-aligning bearing on the
T-types was more for parts cost reduction and ease of assembly than to
relieve any lock-up problem. I don't think it would be a good idea to use
this type of mounting with mechanical brakes, as the end brackets are
assymetrical to the shaft and you might find the shaft trying to move off
its normal axis due to the force of the brake pedal linkage.

Our J2 has a loose-needle roller bearing on the driver's side and a bronze
bush on the passenger side. Since our car has had hydraulic brakes since the
mid-50s, the cross-shaft only moves for handbrake use. It is regularly
greased (the centralised lube system is long gone) and it has never stuck.

While, as Terry says, the system may well be crude - it works. I'd put it
back together the way it was made, with home-made needles if necessary, and
it'll be fine. Bearing suppliers (over here at least) can supply individual
balls such as one uses in oil pump valves: perhaps they can also supply
loose needles?
