Go ahead and drill the hole, and tap it out..been there, done it.

I also drilled a 1/4" hole straight through the shaft and fork and
inserted a bolt and nut through it as added support....

Did it in '84 on my 250 and have never had a problem since...and don't
have to cut the shaft to remove it.
