Larry,
I still believe that one of the alternator charging wires were left off and
it slowly ran the battery down to the point where the car just did not have
enough voltage to fire the car at higher RPMs with the high energy ignition.
They are sensitive to voltage and it could seem like a rev limiter.
Been there done that.....
