Why I like this part (for a very different reason).
I have griped for years about his idiocy of having to bring our rulebook to
registration to show we have it. I do not object in the slightest to the
ownership rule. I object to bringing it to registration.
Registration is for presenting the participant (driver), for verifying his
eligibility to compete including such documentation as may be necessary
(membership card, whatever licenses may be required, etc.).
Tech is for show-and-tell -- showing "stuff." Tech is where you verify you
have all the stuff you need to compete. A safe car, the required safety
equipment, helmet etc. And if we must show the rulebook, tech is the place
to show it, not registration.
Where are rulebooks kept? Mine's in my helmet bag. Other folks keep theirs
in gloveboxes, door side pockets, trunks, with their tools and equipment --
I.E. WITH STUFF THAT GOES TO TECH! Showing the rulebook at registration
makes as much sense as showing the helmet or your stickers at registration.
"Oh, well if he doesn't have it, we have them at registration to sell," I've
been told. Bushwah! I did not have that new SCCA sticker for my car this
year. Cost a buck. Where'd I buy that? At tech!
And Eric's idea to use the rulebook to hold the annual sticker -- said
sticker would need to have info on it such as VIN to assure what car was
teched -- not only makes it more a tech item but is a natural connection,
and assures the rulebook ownership (at least, one book per car if not per
driver -- well, okay, if you have two cars you can put both stickers in the
same book).
