Leave your numbers on the car and don't worry about it. Think about this.
This rule is going to get called on in Tech when they encounter really bad
numbers that are *clearly* against the rules. Anything remotely hard to
read, and someone will cite the rule. You would only be marginally and
technically outside the rules, but would probably not prompt any notice
because they *are* so legible. If everyone can very clearly read your
numbers, then why would they be inclined to give you grief? Yeah, there's a
slight risk, but I would try it and you would be no worse off than a novice
with no numbers if someone wanted to be dinky.
I do support a clearly worded rule however.
