John---Sorry that re-entering Triumph ownership left you with an
immediate breakdown.  
It's difficult to tell how much damage was done when the bottom of the
valve disappeared into the cylinder. Chances are good that it may also
have damaged a piston, and possibly scored the head, valve seat and
cylinder wall. Could even have bent the rod. 
The good news is these engines are very fixable, and relatively easy to
work on. Whether you can do it yourself depends on the tools and
facilities that you have at your disposal. A good shop manual is a must
for repairs such as this.  
If all that's needed is to replace broken parts, it could be done in " a
couple of weekends", as you wished.  Would the mechanic that you had in
mind be willing to take over a job that you've started, then found
beyond your fun factor?
