Egil

You are right there, but then again I have owned many Front-drive cars over
the years and I as a driver made it my business to work out those vices and
drive accordingly.

The first two cars I owned were Mini's with 2.7 turns lock to lock, and
neither of them needed PAS, yet cars of equivalent size are being fitted
with this now and with slower racks. The 1979 Honda Civic EB1 I had next
also came without PAS and it had unequal length driveshafts which allegedly
lead to torque steer problems - never caused me a problem.

The next Civic (1984) I had was dreadful - but it had been designed as a
commodity car, no PAS, but everything was so light, that there was no feel
in the car at all. The steering was rubbery, the brakes over-servoed and the
clutch was excessively light.

I would suspect that if John were to cut the belt to the PAS pump in his
car, the steering would be heavier (especially around town) but the car
would be quite driveable. The problem would be that all the other
componentry would have been made so light (ie steering column - shaft,
universal joints etc) that one of those would soon break and then ...

I can't try cutting the belt on the Citroën as an experiment, as the pump is
also used for the brakes and the suspension. I also expect that SWMBO would
also be a little annoyed...
