Hi Folks,

        The Alt freindly cut off switches have a
dual function.  When you turn them to the "off" 
position they disconnect the battery on one side
of the circut and shunt the rest of the electical
system to ground through a resistor.  This keeps
the Alt from continuing to self excite (that does
sound a little noughty doesn't it), while slowing 
the shutdown down enough to keep from frying diodes
and other sensitive electronics.
