The filter "by pass" valve is there to allow oil to flow around the
filtering element if ti should get plugged up with sludge from lack of
maintenance. Most "spin on" filters that are made as "racing " filters,
don't have a "filter Bypass" Under normal circomstances, I don't believe
that blocking the filter by pass valve could have any detrimental effect.
The normal pressure range at which they open is between 4 and 7 psi. A
possible alternative is you are concerned about excessive stress on the
filter element would be to shim the valve up to cause it to open at say 20
psi.

I never heard of blocking the oil filter bypass. Won't the oil filter just
rupture and send all kinds of gunk throughout the system? They are only
rated for a certain pressure, beyond that the paper element just breaks. I
think we change the filter and oil so often that it will never happen.Ciao,

We always plumb our oiling systems so that the oil goes through the filter
before the cooler so as to prevent debris from having an chance fo getting
into the cooler. The Oil filter "by pass" should, of course, be blocked
shut so that it can not open and allow debris to "by pass" the filter
element.
