Sorry, John, I didn't mean to imply any criticism of the car or it's
designers. Recirculating heaters were fairly standard in the 50's, fresh
air intakes tied to the heater were something of an innovation later in that
decade.
And with the TR4 and later style of heater, with a fresh air intake directly
to the heater, I agree that having the air intake open will enhance heater
operation. My Stag has a somewhat similar arrangement, and having the
intake open does make a noticeable improvement (provided the unheated air
outlets on the dash are closed).
I just don't believe it's true of the TR2/3 heater. Nor do I remember
seeing a factory comment to that effect in any of the TR2/3 literature.
Because the fresh air vent is not linked to the heater, having it open can
only add cold air to the cabin.
