Over the years I have read about how people keep a set of points in
their car in case their electronic ignition breaks down. I haven't
paid too much attention but now am wondering whether it was Pertronix
that had some problem with the part that goes on the shaft of the
distributor i.e. replaces the points.

Can't comment about Pertronix, Jim - but both my cars came fitted with
Lumenition kits. The misfire on the PI was so erratic that I thought
there were injection problems but it all pointed to ignition. Found
this odd as I've never had probs wit OE fit electronic kit. Rang
Lumenition who gave the distinct impression they didn't give a toss
about my probs. It was only when we plugged the car on to a diagnostic
unit at work that the ignition module showed up as seriously
defective.
As I saw no reason to invest with Lumenition for a replacement unit, I
reverted to points and condenser and no more probs.
Then I bought the 2000 as an addition to the fleet.
Everything fine and dandy, except for misfires. Put this on the
diagnostic as well - same problem - same solution. The whole fleet
is now back to points and condenser - including the Fergie. IMHO
points and cond are easy and cheap to change, lend themselves to
simple adjustment and you can do it all at the roadside if necessary.
Thing is, I don't seem to be the only one who has reverted to original
spec. Met plenty of people who've had probs with ignition add-ons of
various makes and it seems we're all happier by reverting to the old
technology. Oddly, I don't seem to have met so many who are happier
with the later technology so perhaps Old Joe doesn't like being
fiddled with?
