The benefit is that you can sit there with your fan turned on with the
mechanical switch and when you want to take of advantage of the extra HP you
turn the fan off.

Voila, you have those extra HP at that moment in time to help you take off
and smoke the tires <g>.  And remember the fan isn't on when you're cruising
either.

As far as a net gain or lost in HP over some longer averaging time I
say....who cares.  The important thing is you just had 10 seconds of fun
with your foot in it.
