This is correct, except it can actually happen on either side.
Consider : with properly installed hubs/adapters, the knockoffs have to be
turned in the normal direction of travel to unscrew. If the splines are
worn enough to allow the wheel to turn on the hub/adapter, then when the
brakes are applied, the hub/adapter stops turning. The wheel continues to
turn (driven by the weight of the moving car), and turns the knockoff in the
normal direction of travel, which unscrews it.
The moral is : If you ever hear that unmistakeable ZZZZZ when stepping on
the brakes (or accelerating from a stop), immediately park the car and call
a tow truck. Then start shopping for new wheels and hubs/adapters.
