There is a product called "Seal-All" which is supposed te be one of those
magic compounds that can fix anything. You might want to try it on a
different containter (ie, pop some holes in a tin can with a finishing
nail, apply Seal-All, and see if it holds the epoxy compound)
My suggestion is to go to the local rad shop (the one with the best
reputation, or the one that's been around longest, or the one that caters
to the hot-rod / restorer's crowd- they're usually the same :-)), and have
the tank given the royal treatment.
The guys at Maurice's Rad Shop here in Victoria did a great job on my gas
tank- it had about 1" of sludge, rust, and guck at the bottom (AFTER I
'cleaned' it out with marbles and agitation). They poked holes in it,
cleaned the rust out, stripped it, patched all holes, slushed it, epoxied
it, and painted, all for $200 CDN. I have a good-as-new tank.
The only caveat: if they estimate a week, expect 4. (especially if your
tank is as bad as mine) reason: they tried 'boiling' it for 1 week. No
go. Sent it to Redi-Strip. 1 week. Came back from Redi-Strip. 1 week.
Epoxy in. Takes about 1 week to fully cure.
Next time I have this situation I will have the tank treated *before* I am
ready to put the car on the road...
