Glad you got the diff on!
When I replaced my diff (many moons ago) I seem to remember that I did
manage to push the spring down far enough to get the studs engaged just with
brute force - but that was a 23-y-o, well sagged spring!
You should do fine by disconnecting one end of it. It'll be easier to apply
strength to the spring at the end, for re-assembly, than it is to apply
strength in the middle. As long as the bolt isn't siezed into the spring
and/or vertical link, this should be no major hassle.
