Richard,

The clearest sign of a UJ on its way out is a clearly audible single 'clunk'
from the rear of the car when you start to accelerate, or lift off the
accelerator. This may be just free play in the diff (which is quite common
and perfectly possible to live with for many thousands of miles), but it is
worth checking out if it appears suddenly, or (if you already have free play
in your diff) if the 'clunk' changes noticeably.

When the UJ is on its last couple of miles it may move to a
'click-click-click' every time the wheel rotates, in addition to the loud
'clunk'.

If you suspect a UJ is damaged, jack the rear of the car up and support it
on stands with the wheels off the ground. Get underneath and twist the
prop-shaft back and forth - you should clearly be able to see if there is
any free play in any of the UJs, either on the half-shafts or (less
frequently) at the rear of the prop-shaft.

If your UJ needs replacing, I have written up the procedure on the Totally
Triumph Network (www.totallytriumph.net) - under Forums; Member-Generated
How-To Clinics; Spitfire & GT6 projects.
