Nolan,
Can you tell me exactly how water is introduced to a properly bled, sealed
hydraulic system? I've often seen this mentioned, but I don't understand how
this takes place.
As for the spongy pedal myth (and for me that's all it's ever been), I own
several cars and all have about the same pedal feel. My Spitfire with DOT 5
feels no spongier than any car I've driven. I do not race, and therefore have
no experience with hot brakes and silicone, but Joe Curry, who does race,
seems to have no misgivings. All I care about is that I can drive down the
road of a mountain and experience no troubles or feelings if insecurity
whatsoever.
If I have air bubbles in my system due to my use of Silicone, they don't seem
to be making any difference in terms of pedal feel or performance. I paid no
special care to bleeding the brakes other than using common sense and simply
pouring in the fluid slowly and working the pedal deliberately, but gently.
I plan on painting my car in an acrylic enamel, much like it was when new.
The kind of paint that DOT 4 destroys. As for the gauntlet question, lets
keep it in context, shall we? I'm really not concerned about the decisions of
any hard core race car drivers (other than the ones who drive Triumph sports
cars perhaps) with respect to DOT 5, as their requirements and driving
conditions are quite different than my own.
Take care,
