hi
The chattering noise in question is my teeth! Its been cold here in the
UK for a while now (though the cold snap has eased off today), and the
net result is that the heater in my TR4 is getting overwhelmed causing
it to pump out cold air.
The unit functions really well in hot weather (!) but when its cold out
and the blower fan is on it cant really cope. Now, I sincerely hope this doesnt
provoke another thermodynamics discussion, but I'd like suggestions as to
improve matters. The cooling system is in good shape and contains
a good shot of antifreeze, I assume the water pump is ok & I can get
a good flow from the engine & radiator drain taps. The feed into the
heater from the engine is via a new control valve & the flow is unrestricted:
I learned to solder with a butane lamp & copper piping and made up those bizzare
"S" shaped pipe parts to feed the heater unit. It aint a pretty sight ...
So - it all works, but I get cold. I have a spare unit but I dont really
want to take it apart & modify it unless I have to. The unit in the car
is nicely buried; I imagine removing the engine is far simpler ...
I understand that the "Big TRs" are overcooled, at least for UK conditions.
My car runs a bit cool unless its the summer. The inlet pipe to the
the heater unit seems cool when its overwhelmed. I'm going to force the
control valve to its open end-stop position to see if that improves matters,
though it appears to almost wide open.
Brrrrrr! Any clues?
Regards, Adrian
