Even a factory replacement?  What if the factory part# is the same for a
range of model years and does not come wiht serial numbers that spell out
that *exact* year?  Most state's smog laws allow a newer engine but not an
older one so the only replacement engine that may be available from the
factory is the lastest year that a given enigne spec was produced.

Does that then make all years "equal"?  See the example in my earlier post.
