[Moore, John] Hmm, this is interesting. My Sentra SE-R seems to
develop a lot of valve train clatter after the Mobil 1 has been in the
engine for about 500 miles. Right after the oil change there is no valve
train noise, but after about 500 miles, there is significant clatter at
startup after sitting overnight, coming from the top of the engine for about
2 seconds. The engine also starts "ticking" like a clock at idle after the
oil gets to this point. Oddly enough, the cars previous owner always ran
Castrol Syntec and the problem never showed, but I switched to Mobil 1 since
that is what I have always used. In talking with a mechanic this weekend, he
said he has seen the same problem in some Mazda engines and it had to do
with the Mobil 1 aerating within the hydraulic lifters.
Anyone have any thoughts?
