This reminds me of a situation several years back. My friend Andy had taken a
Pontiac TransAm 350 (circa 1990-1991?) out for a test drive. He and I engaged
in a little sprint from about 30 mph. I was driving my '89 Sunbird Turbo (165
hp). We were dead even until I had to shift into 3rd at just over 60 mph.
If I remember correctly, the published stats for these two cars had the same
hp/weight ratio. So after eliminating the weight transfer/contact patch
advantage of front-wheel drive vs rear-wheel drive of a standing launch, as
well as being in proper gear, and having a turbo with a broad torque curve
probably worked to my advantage.
