Another possibility, if you've got one installed is the head-oiler
bypass thingy. You _can_ actually have too much oil under the valve
cover - remember that there are no valve stem seals. After I rebuilt by
engine several years ago (including doing the whole head thing - valves,
seats, guides... by a very competent machinist) I found that when the
engine was warm it would start smoking at the light - it got fairly
embarrasing! The bottom end is tight, so I have bags of oil pressure.
I was ready to pull the head to have seals installed when somebody
suggested removing the bypass. I did and the problem went away. I've
since put better than 20k miles on the car without the smoking problem.
Next time I have things that far apart, I will have stem seals installed
and replace the bypass since I am of the 'more is better' school where
lubrication is concerned.
