The one installation using the fabricated plate that I've seen looked a
tad flimsy to me. But part of that was the owner's decision to use lower
grade steel bolts for the job.

Keep in mind that I drive "different" than most folks. Clutchless shifts
are the norm and I don't "dilly dally" when I'm shifting. So the motor
mounts (front and rear) take a real beating on my cars. And yes, I have
broken motor mounts on virtually every car I've ever owned.

My take on the topic of using a factory mount vs. the fabricated style is
that if you have the body off the frame, you might as well do the job
"right". That means either obtain the overdrive appropriate to your frame
_or_ obtain the proper mount that fits your O/D and install that.

Last point - the early mounts are not exactly robust, at least in terms of
the rear engine mount (aka the tranny mount). The rubber gets pretty nasty
when it gets soaked with oil/gas on the 4-speeds and the rubber
delaminates from the mount. SO, I'll bet if you call around to specialist
"breakers" you shuld be able to score a late-style frame mount from a
rusty frame that you could weld in to an early frame.

If you do track down a late style mount, get the whole thing! Get the
section of the frame that it's welded to and get all the plates that make
up the mount.
