Sure, and those stability control systems work great
for their intended purpose but there's no interaction
between the driver and the system (maybe you can turn
it on and off but that's it). You step on the brakes
and steer the car and the computer polls several
sensors hundreds of times a second and from that
figures out which direction the car is going, where it
really should be going, and modulates the appropriate
brake to correct the line. It's the type of job that's
very well suited to a human.

Manual control of individual brakes however is not
something well suited for 99.9% of the general driving
population although I'd be really interested in
driving such a vehicle. Implementing such a system
would however be difficult. I believe Mazda had some
tiny joystick on the steering wheel which would be
imposible to operate under any situation heavy
braking. The only way I could imagine such a system
working is if you have a drive by wire style system
that Mercedes is working on. One military grade force
feedback joystick in your right hand for steering,
throttle and braking, and another in your left hand
for 4 wheel brake bias (and while we're at it how
'bout a system that can also bias power distribution
to the wheels on an AWD vehicle :-). NOW we're having
FUN!!!

Cheers, Joe
