The Solo Events Board is proposing to move the Mazda Miata from D Prepared
to E Prepared for 2003. It's in the May Fastrack. Either check that on the
SCCA web page or wait for the next Sports Car.
The significance of adding the Miata to EP is that class is based
on a formula of 1.05 pounds per cc. And John Thomas of Meredian, MS, in
Tom Lombardo's Honda has won the class eight (8) times. The proposal
includes requiring the Miata to meet the 1.05 pounds per cc formula. I
think that changes the weight by about 8-10 pounds. (Can't remember in
chich direction.)
In any case, Thomas, one of the best drivers in Solo II, was faster by
several seconds last year than the DP class-winning Miata.
The other significant point is that the Honda--same cars, albeit
with different weights--now appears in BOTH D Prepared and E Prepared. Now
all Lombardo has to do is run his Honda in BOTH classes and score two wins.
It has to weigh MORE in EP. <g>
Or maybe some other Honda driver will step up and deliver a top DP
performance. Two that come to mind are Grady Wood and Chris Kannan.
