Regarding traffic from Marina, I just figured out one bypass (I'm sure
everyone has an even better one).  If the one-lane section of 156 is a big
mess, you can hang a right on 183 just before it slims down to 1 lane.  Go
about half a mile on 183 then make a left on Espinoza Rd.  From there it's a
fairly short trip back to 101 in Salinas.  You are adding a few miles in
distance, but in *this* case the shortest line between two points isn't
always the fastest:)

And of course, if you are taking 101 back to the Bay Area, it is usually a
good idea to exit at Cochrane Road before 101 goes from 3 lanes to 2, go
left and use the parallel Monterey Hwy (old 101) until the first overpass
where you can rejoin either 101 or 85.
