Well! Found the problem trying to bleed the front brakes. The Haynes AND the Leyland manul show a rubber seal going into the master cylinder before the tipping valve. Since the rebuild kit had a seal

The original ones I got from TRR were black tarred paper and have held up for 10 years - occassional driving, mind you. The latest ones I got from Vic Brit were simply tan cardboard. Much less robust
