Great question !

First of all, how are your finances? A V-8 costs twice as much too race as a
small bore, ie fuel, tires brake pads.

Secondly, what do your buddys race? As Miles stated, it's a social situation
and it's more fun to run against people you know, like and trust.

Lastly, forget the competitive issue. You can improve ALMOST any car too be
competitive within its group, the rest is up to you. Seat time - seat time,
seat time..
