Chevron bought all of Gulf's worldwide interests in 1982 or 83. Because of
anti-trust laws, the FTC required Chevron to divest itself of a certain part
of Gulf. BP aquired the Gulf retail locations, and I believe some of the
refineries in a subsequent transaction. There may have been some exploration
rights involved too. It is my understanding that the oil rights that Gulf had
were the main thing that Chevron was after.
