Steve/Ed/et all:
Just my two-cents worth on this topic, as it strikes close to home. The
SF Region of SCCA runs Vintage events with much the same philosophy as
HSR does in the East. Many of the cars are current GT cars in SCCA but
they have been classed to run against cars of similar preparation and
displacement. It isn't "fair" to the authentically prepared cars since
there are no weight limits or bounds on suspension/drive train
replacement but that's the way it is with that particular organizing
body. I understand that and accept it. I always find someone to race
with; they may not be in my class but we have a good time anyway.
Our local SCCA's Vintage program, on the other hand, is for pre-1973
cars properly prepared for the period in which they raced - only. Since
we run as a separate group during the normal race weekend, the small
numbers we draw (15-30) is not a problem. This way, we have the best of
both worlds where we get to race with "real" vintage cars (SCCA) and can
also attend the larger, "all vintage" weekends with HSR if we choose.
It becomes the racer's choice. If your car is eligible to race under
the organizing body's rules, then go for it. It's supposed to be all
about having fun anyway!!!
