I had a similar situation with my TR3 in 1972. The studs holding on the wire
wheel adapter broke. I head a bump and then the tire rolled past me going down
the road.

Subject: Re: [TR] Is this symptom I'm getting indicative of a bad front
wheel bearing?
And I lost a front wheel on my TR3B at 70 mph on I-70 in 2014. I've not
quite gotten over that episode yet, Yes, don't fool around with wheel
bearings!
The root cause of my wheel-fell-off episode was a restorer who was more
used to MG bearing preloads than a TR3's non-preloaded bearings. He read
this part of the Red Book service instructions as 101 lb·ft, not 10 lb·ft.
Yikes.

This happened in western Ohio, not too far from Macy's Garage as it turned
out. And although Mark and Co. didn't do the work that led to the wheel
coming off, they know my car and were able to take it into their shop that
afternoon while I flew home.
So listen to the voice of two of us with scary experiences. Take care with
wheel bearings.
