Thanks all for your suggestions. I'm going to do a bunch of testing on the 
speedo and current cable and see if I can't lock down what is going on. My 
entertainment for the weekend between gigs. :-)

Thanks as well, Geo, for the link to the speedo rebuild pages. I'll go soak up 
some more knowledge soon...
