On mine, the gap at the front of the gearbox tunnel lets me get a box 
wrench in there... then I run a bungee cord from the other end of the 
wrench to the gear shift lever.  This lets it jam as it turns and I can 
remove the bolt from the starter side.  I have always been able to pull 
the starter out with the exhaust system intact (stock header).  This is 
a pre-50K bullet-nose starter but would think the other style would be 
the same.  I went thru a period where I got a lot of practice with 
this.  I think I removed the air cleaners, fuel line between the carbs 
and disconnected the back end of the choke linkage to get a bit more 
room to work.
