Might be different for you, but on TS39781LO I only had to undo the 3 nuts on
the headpipe to get the old starter out. Did that a lot before finally buying
the gear-drive, so I got pretty good at it. The gear-drive unit is smaller in
diameter, so I can change it without disturbing the exhaust.

You're probably safe using a replacement for the starter you take off, if it was
working before. But with the starter (or the dust cover on the bottom) off, you
can see the ends of the bolts if you have a bolt-on flywheel (as your car should
have).
You'll also need some small wiring changes for the gear-drive starter. I wanted
to keep the original starter solenoid functional for several reasons, so I moved
the heavy starter lead to the same post as the battery cable (so the starter
gets its juice directly from the battery instead of through the original
solenoid), and ran a new wire from the other stud on the original solenoid, to
the solenoid connection on the new starter. Not the only way to do it, but I
like it.
