I would certainly check the valve clearances next, there's a thin line
between running and not running.  1 & 3 are adjacent in the firing order, if
#1 is doing something strange like blowing exhaust back into the intake, it
might knock out #3 too.  A compression check would be a good idea too, after
running the valves.
