Jim, Joe and the rest,
The last time I was in the UK (1984) all the places I visited, hotels,
restaurants had both room temp and chilled beer/ale. There was one pub I
was taken to that served only room temp however. Most room temp pubs
keep their stock in the cellar so it is not room temperature but not as
cold as we get in the bars in the US. Beer experts say that getting the
brew too cold kills the flavor. But with US beer, the breweries have
already done that so that is why the US serves it cold.
Here in upstate NY we have the Matts Brewery which makes the Saranac
line and they recommend the beer at something in the high 40s or low 50s
I believe. An ale like Saranac's Pale Ale does have a better flavor
cool but not cold in my opinion. I have also heard beer experts say that
one shouldnt drink beer to cool off, but to enjoy the flavor! But
sometimes a real cold beer just feels so good going down one doesnt have
time to enjoy the various components (hops, malt, etc.)
I guess the best solution when drinking a beer such as Saranac Pale Ale
or a Sierra Nevada or other micro is to have a cold Coors Lite fast to
cool down then sit down and have a "real" beer nice and slow. The only
problem there is who has a Coors lite handy when you need one?
