It was actually based on expected air temp, over 70F was 50 weight; 10F-70F
(and British Isles) was 30 weight; and under 10F (yeah, right!) was 20
weight.
But since the allowable range of viscosity of 90 weight gear oil covers the
allowable range for 50 weight motor oil ...
