I think I posted this idea last fall, but it seems relevant again..

"Peanut Butter Can O' Death"
The Ultimate Mousetrap.
Campbell's soup can, remove label and pierce the top and bottom w\ 1/4"
diameter hole.
Skewer the can with 1/4" shaft, ensure can spins freely
Suspend rod/can assembly across the top edges of a 5 gallon spackle bucket
(or equiv)
apply/mold a strip of peanut butter around the can's circumference, at the
midpoint.
Add a few inches of water to the bucket. Install a suitable 'ramp' from the
ground
to the rim of the bucket. Rub a bit of P-Butter on the ramp, for aromatic
attraction.
Mice will attempt to nibble the can's P-Butter, and will rotate the can and
invariably
go for a swim much too soon after eating. ( Didn't Momma mouse warn them?)
If you are in colder climates, add a bit of antifreeze to the bucket.
Otherwise,
they'll land on ice and merely freeze. I find it difficult to use the two
expressions
"eating my car" and "feelings of compassion for mice" in the same
sentence.....

Fine points:
* Use a broth can, as the lumpy stuff( e.g.. stew) is hard to get out of a
1/4 hole.
* Smooth P-Butter is easier to mold onto the can ( warm it a bit) although
        mice probably prefer "Chunky style".
* A few tablespoons of vegetable oil on the water can reduce any
objectionable
   odors from the mouse soup.
* No danger of the cat picking up a poisoned mouse, and I've never seen a
cat play
with a wet mouse. ( Kitty's conundrum? Pussies paradox?)

We've had pretty good luck with ordinary mouse/rat poison pellets. It
supposedly makes them really, really thirsty so they leave the area to find
water and die or whatever. Although for years we had the distinct odor of
dead mouse in the trunk of the TR3 after it spent a week in a barn.
Fortunately, the leaking gas odor has now overpowered the dead mouse odor so
it's no longer a problem.

Cheers, Don
