Rob,
Since I used to run a tire shop, I would say that they are full of hooey.
IMHO the only reason you would need to run tubes on a tubeless rim would be
if there is something wrong with the bead sealing surface that wouldn't
allow it to seal. Besides that, if your tire goes flat while running, tube
or not, without a safety ridge the tire will become unseated off the bead.
I would find a different tire shop.
