Assuming that it was running ok before and you didn't adjust or replace
anything else, one possibility is that one or both carbs' rubber diaphragms
were torn slightly when you took the carbs apart. That, or they might not
have been located properly during reinstallation (less likely, though).
Either way, that allows air leaks that will cause the symptoms you describe.
Should they prove to be torn, a temporary fix can be acheived with plastic
tape, although it's best to get new ones asap. (I don't know how long the
plastic tape will hold up to today's gasoline; used to last me several days
to a week way back when). :-)
