Rob,
Usually there is a crunchy roar or a grinding sound in first and/or
reverse when the problem is as bad as you describe. An intermittent high
pitched squeal is sometimes heard early on as the roller bearings begin
to freeze and break up. By the time you discover chunks of metal, the
bearings have mostly disintegrated and the laygear is being wallowed out
by the bearingless shaft. Gently move the car in first, then reverse a
couple of times (after refilling w/oil) and I bet you notice a grinding
sound. Should be more noticeable with the carpets and cover removed.
I've had similar symptoms in 2 O/D TR6's and in both cases the fault
was layshaft bearings and the O/Ds were fine after thoroughly washing
out all traces of metal filings.
In any case, the presence of large steel bits means something important
has given up and you'll have to remove the transmission & O/D to find
out what. I wouldn't drive the car further as expensive damage will
likely occur by doing so.
Good luck, and let me know what you find when you get it apart.
