It would depend on what color the metal flakes were.  If very fine (like
finely ground pepper), brass/copper color, this indicates synchro wear and
is normal.  That doesn't necessary mean that the synchros are still good,
but the wear incurred under normal operation over many miles causes this
condition.  If however  they are grey/silvery flakes this indicates gears
(unlikely but possible) or bearings (most likely), and depending upon the
amount and mileage may need to be addressed -  Unfortunately, the only SURE
way to tell is to take it apart and look at everything.  And if you do go
that route, it's false economy NOT to replace ALL the bearings, and at
least second and third synchro rings provided everything else checks out.
At that point it's (relatively :-}) cheap insurance.
