Thanks for all you're responses on this matter.  From what everyone is saying, I
don't think the layshaft bearings/gears are gone in my tranny.  Gears are very
smooth and there are no noises from the tranny that I can hear.  But something 
has
given out as evidenced by the metal flakes in the tranny oil.

The oil that I drained had lots of fine, I repeat fine, metal bits, no big 
chunks,
no grey sludge.  I'm gradually clueing in that the PO wasn't very religious 
(oops, I
should maybe avoid that phrase!!) about maintenance and fluids.  The tranny oil 
I
drained was very, very dark.  I also see the brake fluid is dark and needs to be
changed.  I also can't identify the substance in the rad so I'm gonna flush the
sytem and change that too.  And the big one, while the car was up on jack 
stands, I
decided to top up the diff.  I pumped almost a litre into it!!  It was very low.
Based on that track record, I'd almost bet the tranny oil hasn't been changed 
since
the OD stopped working about 12+ years ago, according to said PO.  I'd also 
wager
he's never done anything to the tranny at all so whatever gave out 12 years ago
hasn't gotten worse, just plugged up some tiny opening in the OD works.  Maybe 
the
large amount of metal flakes are just 12 years worth of normal tranny wear!

I'm gonna keep driving it until the season is over up here, only another two 
months
or so.  "My mechanic" (the Ottawa version anyway) didn't think anything was 
wrong
with the tranny when he checked the car out for me before I bought it.  I'll 
change
the tranny oil again in a week or so when I'm back from a trip to Seattle.  The 
new
tranny oil will have had a chance to clean a bit by then.  I'll also have a go 
at
removing the OD relief valve/dashpot that I couldn't get out before, and find 
the
elusive 1 inch spanner and remove the solenoid and clean and check it as well, 
and
also clean the pump filter again.  All told, maybe another hour for all that, 
since
the OD sump has to come off again to completely drain it.  If the OD STILL 
doesn't
work, then I'll give up for now.

Point taken about the layshaft bearings, though.  If I pull the tranny to clean 
the
OD, I'll definitely replace those bearings as the car has 72K miles on it and
replacing them seems to be cheap insurance
