I have found that the wires look great but if you drive very much they
require a great deal of tender loving care. It doesn't take much to
"unbalance" them. Someone on the list (George?) has gone the spacer route
and I think I will do the same on mine when the time comes. I have a set of
Moss' MiniLites with 185/70's that work great on the road on my driver.
They'll get transferred to the '61 and an older set of steels w 165's on
them will be put on the '58. I plan on having the wires with 5.90's
mounted on them for show. My problem is that the '61 currently is setup
for wires so I will switch out the rear axles to some that have the longer
studs on them. (For that matter, I am going to see if one of the 4 rear
ends I have is a 4.11 to replace the 3.70 )
Later,
Carl F. Musson,
You can't tell which way the car went by just looking at the road...

Subject: TR4 Wire Wheel Conversion
Listers,
I'm sitting here with a big fat grin on my face. A set of chrome wire
wheels arrived today from TRF. I ordered them at the VTR for a big
discount.
My wife came to the VTR with and we had an unforgettable time. A great
vacation and intense TR event. She mentioned to me... "how come your car
doesn't have those pretty wheels like Don Sfora's car?" Well I explained
that some cars had them but many still didn't.... and I was hoping to buy
them next year or the year after.
She says " you car would look much better... why don't order them... THERE
ON SALE". This time the famous shopping theory was working for me.
Allll-right
I fought for about 30 seconds just to make it look good and went to place
my order. Got the whole scha-bang for 25% off.
Now the questions. What do I have to do to for a proper conversion? The
VTR site is down or a least to me. If this is covered in the maintenance
section... never mind.
Do I have to cut the studs. Any tips on how to do it?
How much needs to be cut?
Would it be better or easier to replace the studs?
Or does the spacer plate idea work better... any downsides?
When balancing can I use regular rim mounted weights or should I find
someone who has the stick on kind they use on alloy wheels?
How tight do the hub nuts need to be?
How tight should the knockoffs be?
Does the hub get buttered the silvery grease (can't remember name)
I have seen copper colored stuff used as well?
Thanks folks..... All advice will be appreciated
