I don't think you have to remove the head. You can definitely get the new
followers in their bores with the head on.

Does the camshaft retainer clip reside in front of or behind the plate? If it's
behind it (I can't remember, and I was just through my engine a few months
back),
the plate must come off :( .

I'm running a S2 that I got from TSI using stock marks with a new chain and the
96k mile sprockets. Really nice improvement above 4000 rpm. (PS if you have to
take the head off, take it to the machine shop and have it skimmed to 9.5:1
compression even better...)
