Those who have a acces to a Haynes manual will find a step by step instruction
in chapter 1 called:

Engine removal without gearbox

It doesnt sound much easyer than removing the engine with gearbox because it
involves removing a list of things like bonnet, radiator, seats etc. .

The two most important steps seem to be:

49. Place a rope sling around the front and rear of the engine, or chains and
hooks to the front and rear of the cylinder head, and take away the weight of
the engine from the mountings.

50. Using a garage hydraulic jack or other suitable means support the weight of
the gearbox and overdrive unit if fitted...

Doing it this way means that the car cant be rolled as long as the jack has to
support the gearbox which is one more disadvantage.
